Advice > Articles > INDEPENDENT SUCCESS STORY: Guitarist Joe Bonamassa

Playing an average of 200 shows worldwide in theaters and large clubs each year, and staying involved in a number of innovative side projects, blues/rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa is a great example of what one road dog and hard working entrepreneur can accomplish all on his own.

Opening for B.B. King when he was only 12 years old, Bonamassa continued playing  relentlessly around upstate New York for the next ten years honing his craft and creating a buzz. After building up a great deal of credibility as a rising blues star, Bonamassa eventually joined forces with the band Bloodline (featuring the sons of famous artists like the Doors, Miles Davis, and the Allman Brothers), recording one album and hitting the road. Soon after, Bonamassa moved on to touring with the Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn on Jetro Tulls’s tour and then finally to releasing his solo debut album on his own label J&R Adventures.

Since forming J&R Adventures, Bonamassa has pushed forward to independently release 11 studio albums, 11 live recordings, and 7 video albums of his live tours. Eric Clapton, BB King, Paul Jones, Beth Hart and Aeorosmith’s bassist Brad Whitford are just a few of the guest performers/collaborators on his works. Bonamassa’s works have even topped the Billboard blues charts and some have even earned him a Grammy nomination. Can’t complain about that!

If all of this was not enough, Bonamassa also releases guitar instruction materials (books and DVDs), teaches guitar, and performs clinics. He also sells an impressive line of merchandise while out on the road, neatly packaged and displayed on tables outside of the venues, and he is involved in side recording/touring project bands, such as Black Country Communion, featuring bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes and drummer Jason Bonham. Pretty impressive!

Needless to say, Bonamassa is truly one of the hardest working man in show business and evidence of what you can accomplish with hard work, talent, and an innovative spirit.
