Of interest to singer/songwriters, bands, producers, managers, start-up record label personnel, and anyone interested in DIY grassroots marketing strategies that utilize a limited to zero budget. Participants work individually or in teams to prepare for the release of an independent Record. You learn basic marketing concepts to help you DISCOVER YOUR VISION, ANALYZE YOUR FANS, KNOW YOUR COMPETITORS, DETERMINE YOUR GOALS, AND FIND THE PERFECT MIX OF MARKETING STRATEGIES RANGING FROM BRANDING, PRODUCT, PRICE, PLACE, MARKETING INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND PROMOTION. SOCIAL MEDIA, FILM AND TV LICENSING, GIGGING, RADIO, AND PUBLICITY ARE ALL DISCUSSED.  Techniques for mailing press kits, following-up, and tracking results are also INVESTIGATED. You create your own marketing plans and timelines, THAT is to BE WORKSHOPPED IN CLASS. Instructor OFFERS ONE FINAL EVALUATION OF YOUR PLAN TOWARD THE END OF CLASS. At the completion of this course, you present your marketing plan to a panel of expert judges for review and analysis. Student volunteers perform a live  WEEKEND concert showcase in a popular L.A. club booked and promoted by the class. Weekly lectures, class discussions, and exercises are supplemented by industry guest speakers emphasizing a particular marketing strategy. Required text: The Musician's Handbook: A Practical Guide to Understanding the Music Business by Bobby Borg (Billboard Books). Internet access required to retrieve course materials.

Bobby Borg, major label, international, and DIY recording/touring artist with over 25 years' experience in the music business. Mr. Borg is a music consultant, A&R advisor to music supervisors and independent labels, and a regular contributor to popular music business publications. He received the UCLA Extension Department of the Arts Instructor of the Year Award in 2009.
