Build An Effective Web Store To Distribute Your Products And Make Sales

Personal websites can be used as a storefront to directly distribute your products and services and make sales to your target audience. Websites are not a new topic of discussion, yet it surprises me how many artists still get this wrong. Just be sure your site is uniquely branded and conveniently laid-out as follows:

  • News and Social Networking Links: With performance schedules, press updates, and current gossip to help get your visitors’ attention to your store.
  • About: Including your company’s history, product reviews, company policies, shipping information,  and money-back guarantees to build sales credibility.
  • Media: With music samples, videos clips, and product graphics to hold their interest and entice them to buy.
  • Contact: Including an email and phone number to eliminate ordering concerns and help customers make a decision to buy.
  • Links: Including more established online retailers to provide alternative places to make sales.
  • Mailing List: With fields to capture emails and other personal information to facilitate on-going communications and customer service. And most importantly....
  • Store: To offer your records securely in both physical and digital formats, and provide detailed ordering, processing, and logistical information to get customers to take action.

On the latter note, remember that a number of services and application software or “web widgets” (such as Bandcamp and Topspin Media) can make it easy for you to create a store and sell your recordings online. E-commerce services (such as PayPal) and customized “shopping carts” (such as osCSS and OpenCart) can help you process credit cards and make sales.

You can also easily allow your customers to pay by check or money order by providing your mailing address and allowing them to connect with you the old-fashioned way — by snail mail.

For more information on e-commerce, check out Janice Reyold’s The Complete E-commerce Book: Design, Build & Maintain A Successful Web-Based Business. By the way, we’ll discuss websites more in my upcoming book. Keep posted to my site and social networks for more.
